Hmong Eau Claire Our Story

A Legacy of Resilience: The Story of Eau Claire’s Hmong Community

The story of the Eau Claire Hmong New Year is deeply rooted in history, resilience, and the power of community. Since the first Hmong families arrived in Eau Claire in 1976, our community has grown, flourished, and become an integral part of the city’s cultural landscape. Every year, the New Year celebration is not just a festival—it is a reminder of the journey that brought us here, a way to honor our ancestors, and a gathering that strengthens bonds for generations to come.

At its heart, ECHNY is more than an event—it’s a living tradition. It’s a place where elders pass down stories, where children wear traditional clothing with pride, and where food, music, dance, and sports weave together the beauty of Hmong culture. For over four decades, this celebration has provided a sense of belonging and connection for both Hmong families and the wider Eau Claire community.

This year, we are carrying that mission forward in a powerful way: by inviting everyone to contribute to a community photo collection that will showcase our shared journey. From old family portraits to snapshots of New Year festivities, these photos tell the story of resilience, identity, and joy. Each submission represents a piece of our collective memory—reminding us of where we began, celebrating how far we’ve come, and inspiring hope for the future.

The photo tribute will be displayed at ECHNY 2025 on October 11–12 at the Sonnentag Event Center, creating a space where history and celebration meet. Visitors will be able to walk through a visual timeline that captures both everyday life and milestone moments of the Eau Claire Hmong community.

By participating, you’re not just sharing a photo—you’re preserving history, honoring family, and strengthening our legacy. Together, we can create a powerful reminder that our story is not just about the past, but also about the future we are building for generations to come.

Join us this year at the Eau Claire Hmong New Year to celebrate, connect, and continue writing our story—together.
